So motion capture has been around for a while now. The likes of Robert Zemeckis pioneered it with The Polar Express, Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis turned it up to 11 with Gollum and Lord Of The Rings and James Cameron took us to a whole new world (quite literally too) with Avatar. And now Seth MacFarlane gets hold of a motion capture suit, and shits all over motion capture history. Seriously MacFarlane? A talking bear? A dirty, foul mouthed talking bear? A dirty, foul, mouthed, no penis, talking bear? In all seriousness, what could come out of something like that? Nothing but hilarity really. And I’m talking real, dirty, filthy, shitting on the floor types of hilarity.
MacFarlene co-writes, directs, voices and acts out Ted. A cuddly little teddy bear that came to life many years ago when his young owner (Mark Wahlberg) wished really hard, for a friend for life. Years later, all grown up the two live together coupled up with John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis). Between the jigs, reels and copious amounts of pot Lori gives John an ultimatum. The bear or her. So Ted moves out and attempts to make his own furry way in the world. Stick in a few lunatics and the on / off relationshippy stuff and you genuinely have the comedy of the year.

Wahlberg does comedy really, really, really well. He was phenomenal in The Other Guys and here he is again, being incredibly likeable and downright hilarious. Mila Kunis is right at home and being a MacFarlane lifer (as it were, what you didn’t know shes Meg on Family Guy, COME ON!!!!) shes a pure natural for this. But is Ted is the real star here. The computer animated teddy is nothing but believable. And as filthy as he is, he is incredibly likeable. And while vocally, Ted sounds a bit too similar to Peter Griffin, you soon forget the Spooner Street resident and just absorb the madness.
Story wise, its nothing too elaborate. After all this is a movie about a talking bear. But it works and works very well in places. There's a decent pace to it, and while some jokes miss the mark, there are no shortage of laugh out loud moments that will have you choking on your popcorn.
Ted just falls short of full marks, but is genuinely hilarious and while it may offend some of the more conservative types, the rest of you prepare for mayhem. MacFarlane has a great knack of pushing the envelope in Family Guy. In Ted, he burns the envelope to the ground. Ted is the comedy of the year, paws down!
