When I read the first issue of comic book Happy!, about an aging Mafia hit-man who is given a shot at redemption by a tiny, blue flying horse (how could I not pick it up?), I thought it could make a pretty good movie. And Lo and Behold, someone else had the same idea. Namely Wu-Tang Clan member, and The Man With The Iron Fists director, RZA, producer Reginald Hudlin, and the books writer, Grant Morrison.
The project is its early stages, with the plan being to develop it before setting it up at a studio, with RZA and Hudlin producing, Morrison writing the script, and Rza at the helm. The comic only debuted last week, so it remains to be seen where the story goes, but with it being described as a cross between It's A Wonderful Life, Sin City, and Care Bears, it should provide enough of a basis for the movie to bring the people in. The comic is quite violent, and with Morrison on board, I don't think he will tone it down too much, so we're probably looking at an R rating if the movie does get made (I think that will depend on how well The Man With The Iron Fists is received on it's release later this year). Hopefully it does better than the most recent R rated comic adaption, Dredd, which undeservedly died a death at the American box office.
