2011 runaway success Drive was one of the year’s most talked about movies and catapulted Ryan Gosling to the heights he is currently enjoying. Director Nicholas Winding Refn had revealed in the recent past that our hero did indeed survive and live to drive another day. In a very open ended conclusion (which saw Gosling’s character bleeding out behind the wheel of his car before driving away into the sunset), did open the remote possibility of his character appearing in some sort of sequel. Now a year down the line Refn has dampened down speculation about Drive 2 but did seem to hint that the driver may appear in a spin off of sorts. The director previously pouring hot water on the prospect when he was quoted as saying:
“Well, I think that… hmm. Let me just say that I haven’t made up my mind yet. Stranger things have happened…” he also went on to say “[Driver] lives on for more and new adventures.”
However Refn confirmed today to quash the rumours of a Drive 2: “That is never going to happen. But the character of The Driver might return in another film. We’re playing with that idea. We’ll see what happens.”
One possible outcome could be the idea of a prequel with no relation to the first instalment whatsoever in terms of storyline which in itself raises many possibilities. I guess we’ll have to wait and see but as Refn himself says stranger things have happened….
