The internet is on fire at the moment with rumours that Matthew Vaughan is to direct (or at least in negotiations) Star Wars Episode VII, which is to be released in 2015. As you may be aware, Vaughan has dropped off directing the X-Men sequel, but bare in mind he also has purchased the rights to the rather brilliant Superior by Mark Millar.
One wonders is Millar more at home with a more independent production compared to such a box office monster as Star Wars. Considering the amazing job he did with Kick-Ass it’s easy to see why an independent feature ala Kick-Ass might suit him. Back in January 2011, the director spoke about X-Men: First Class stating “I’m at that stage where I feel like a boxer against the ropes,” The Kick-Ass director went on to say that he has never been under so much time pressure. “The good thing about the independent world is I never even knew if I was going to get distribution. I’m used to finishing a film and then crossing your fingers that someone is going to like it. This is totally doing it the other way around. We’ve definitely got a release date and we’ve got to make it.”
So theres some food for thought (maybe we’re wrong, maybe we’re right), but what a director to have on board if the rumour mill is correct? One wonders if Jane Goldman would come on board as a writer, given she’s been a long time collaborator with Vaughan. Either way, it’s exciting times, and speaking of time, 2015 is only around the corner and the last thing anybody wants is a new Star Wars movie to be rushed! Watch this space!
