Joe Dante's Gremlin's is one of my favorite movies of all time, so it is with a mixture of apprehension and 'Oh my god, make it now!' that I take in news that Warner Bros. are looking to greenlight the return Gizmo and his mischievous brethren to the big screen. Details are scarce at the moment, but it turns out the project hinges on the involvement of Steven Spielberg, executive producer on the original. It is highly, highly doubtful that he will helm the movie, but everything points to the project not going ahead if Spielberg's name is not attached.
While I would love to see a new Gremlins movie in the cinema's, one thing that gets alarm bells ringing is that there is a chance that CG effects will be considered to bring the Gremlins to life. Now usually I'm not one to go on about this ruining the franchise and the memories of the originals, it's not like they are rounding up every copy of the movie on DVD and setting fire to them, but the puppetry and practical effects of the Gremlins movies are what make them so charming and beloved. My favourite shot from any film is of a rotoscoped army of Gremlins walking down a street, and the fact that I knew the actors interacted with a puppet of Gizmo added to my enjoyment of the movie. So while I will be hoping against hope that the Gremlins find their way to a cinema screen again, part of me is ready to be disappointed if it isn't done right.
