Take this for what it is. Zack Snyder's spokeperson has spoken to The Hollywood Reporter stating
"While he is super-flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.”
Denial is also a river in Egypt. I still stand over the article though, Snyder would be great!
Zack Snyder had no interest in directing a new Star Wars movie, but that’s not to say the Man Of Steel director wasn’t interested in developing one! Currently Snyder is finishing off Man Of Steel which flies onto big screens (or maybe through them) this Summer. The 300 director though is developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within that universe, although it will be parallel to the next trilogy.
It will be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s rather brilliant Seven Samurai, except we’ll get lightsabers as opposed to katanas. Of course its not the first time that Kirosawa and Star Wars have been linked. George Lucas was influenced by The Hidden Fortress (which was about a princess, her loyal general and two peasants who all need to travel through enemy lines in order to reach their home region) and Lucas also rates The Seven Samurai quite highly saying “It’s a brilliant, brilliant film, and every time I see it I can't believe the magic mixture of a great story and great acting and humour and action and suspense — wonderful cinema. The art of moving pictures is on every frame of this movie.”
So whatever Snyder is developing, who knows, but it sure is exciting times to be a movie fan, let alone a Star Wars fan. Snyder (here I go again) is incredibly talented visually and taking Watchmen as an example shows how incredibly loyal and clued in the dude is to the source material and considering Man Of Steel is looking like its got plenty of substance, its hard to criticise him for style over substance currently. I’d go as far to say that Snyder could make a rather brilliant Star Wars movie with the right script, and that includes the new trilogy!
