Here’s a success story. The first youtube series to ever be made into a film. The Hardy Bucks started out on youtube, then ended up on RTE and now they’re hitting the road on the big screen. For the unaware, The Bucks hail from a little town in Co.Mayo called Castletown. Eddie, Buzz, Boo, Frenchtoast and Viper are a nice bunch of lads who partake in the kind of antics nice bunches of lads would partake in. Drinking, riding, getting stoned and the occasional game of football.
Their big screen debut sees the Bucks hit the road for the European Championships in Poland. On the way they end up in Amsterdam and find themselves in a spot of bother after running up a rather large bill in a club. With no way of paying their bill, the club owner comes up with a payment method. They have no choice but to deliver a large amount of drugs to Poland. With hilarious consequences.
The Hardy Bucks movie has enough jokes and madness to warrant at least 2 viewings. There is alot going on here with a great balance between all it’s characters. It’d be rather easy to concentrate on one or two main characters and everyone else play second fiddle. There’s a good balance here and even if you’re new to The Hardy Bucks you get a really good idea who’s who relatively quickly. And it’s the cast that really make this something great.
The lads themselves have genuinely a superb chemistry between them all and you’d expect that considering how long they’ve been together. But besides that, their likeability is through the roof, even the incredibly annoying Viper. It’s nigh on impossible to take a dislike to the lads. Maybe it’s because the have a subtle innocence about them, maybe it’s sympathy you’ll have for them but you can’t deny their likeability.
The movie itself is a bit all over the place, makes little sense but has oodles of charm. That said, at times it feels a little bit bloated and seems a bit dragged out. Thankfully, though you’re never more than a few minutes away from a gag and some hilarity. Granted, It does feel a little bit restrained. In the sense that it could have been more explicit, it could have been more risqué. Maybe there’s an unrated version that’ll be on the home release.
If you’re a fan of The Hardy Bucks you’ll lap this up and even if you’re not, it’s a great introduction to Castletown’s finest. With a genuinely likeable cast, The Hardy Bucks movie is a real popcorn choker. Laugh out loud madness! Check it out!
