For a property not a lot of people would be aware of, there is an insane amount of speculation surrounding Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie that will explore the more cosmic side of the Marvel cinematic universe. The latest piece of casting news from the movie is an interesting one, with John C. Reilly offered the part of Rhomann Dey. In the comics, Dey is a member of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force similar to DC's Green Lanterns. For the movie, Dey is described as "the Agent Coulson of the Guardians universe", keeping the Guardians in line, while answering to a representative from Earth (I would expect this to be Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, but apparently Marvel are looking at Alan Rickman, Hugh Laurie, and Ken Watanabe for the role). Couple this with reports that the alien Kree Empire might be making an appearance, and it seem Marvel has plans for the movie much bigger than we originally thought, making Guardians of the Galaxy a jumping off point for Marvel's cosmic heroes to make the transition to the big screen.
HitFix, who reported the possibility of Reilly's involvement, also went on to drop some details about the movie, from what they claim to be a reputable source. If true, these can be considered spoilers.................so you have been warned.
The most interesting detail to me was the possibility that Micheal Rooker, cast as Yondu, founding member of the Guardians original team from the 60's (the movie will focus on the teams recent incarnation for 2008), will serve as the movies main villain, re-imagined as a space pirate who escapes from an intergalactic asylum for the criminally insane (where Rocket Raccoon, future Guardians member, works as security). Lee Pace, who was originally announced to be taking the villain role, will actually start off as a bad guy, before eventually switching sides. The character he plays is still unknown, though this new information opens up speculation to include Adam Warlock, a member of the team who was left out of the movies main roster, and Captain Mar-vell, a high ranking member of the Kree military (if the Kree do appear, this is the most believable). Again, these are all rumours, and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Guardians of the Galaxy is released August 1st 2014.
