For many of us, Star Wars and George Lucas holds a very special place in our hearts. Simply because it was the first big screen spectacle that blew our minds into a million tiny pieces. And for those who weren’t at the cinema in 1977, the advent of BETAMAX and subsequently VHS meant that the experience lived on in our front rooms on 21” CRT TVs (remember them).
As a child Star Wars took me to places where I never thought imagined. It brought me to places which not only provided so much entertainment, but happiness and joy. And while I’m 37 now, the culture and experience of what George Lucas created still lives on, albeit a little deeper inside of me. I guess like most things, love can fade or certainly bury itself a little deeper. And while I no longer have a collection of action figures buried in a garden somewhere, all it takes is that spectacular John Williams score and the Star Wars logo to appear on screen to instantly transport me to place of wonder and awe and make me feel like a kid again. To make me feel like I could fly the hell out of an X-Wing, to make me feel that you should always let the Wookie win and more importantly to make me feel like nothing else mattered for 2 odd hours.
So today, is as good a day as any to dig out the saga (whatever versions you have, I know you have multiple ones) and hit the play button and celebrate all thing Star Wars. And for 2 odd hours enjoy what has made the cinema so magical for not only you, but your long suffering other half (if you have one) and if you’re even luckier, your kids, who will enjoy the movies as much as you did and still do.
And maybe some day, just like you, they’ll make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs!
May the 4th be with you!
Incidentally, we’d love to hear what Star Wars means to you, so by all means drop a few lines into the comments section below.
