So, home invasion horror movie The Purge was released in America on Friday, topping the box office with a weekend take of $36.4 million. With the movie being made for $3 million, this has set a record for box office profits, and has become one of the surprise hits of the summer. The concept, a future American government allows its citizens one night a year to act out their most brutal desires without fear of consequence, has done most of the films marketing, piqueing audiences' interest almost immediately, leading to the truly impressive box office take. And in a move that has shocked just about nobody, producer Steve Blum has taken to Twitter to announce that a sequel is now in development. There is no word yet if writer/director James DeMonaco will return, but it would be safe to assume the sequel would explore the world of The Purge, leading to a new cast of actors.
As per my review, I enjoyed The Purge, but felt the home invasion angle was too small for the incrediably original and well thought out concept. Hopefully, the sequel will bring with it a bigger budget to really explore the concept to it's fullest. Ever since I saw The Purge, I have been talking my friends ears off of how a scenario similar to 1993's Judgement Night, of a group of friends hunted through a city by a vicious gang, would have been perfect for it. What would you like to see in the sequel?
