In pre-Civil War America, Solomon Northrup was a free black man, living a happy life in upstate New York with his family. Approached by two men about a job in Washington D.C., his life was forever changed when he was abducted and forced into slavery. From Shame and Hunger director Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave tells the true story of Northrup's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) captivity, how he struggled to not only stay alive, but also keep his dignity.
McQueen is known for his powerful dramas, and this trailer shows 12 Years a Slave will be no different. Everyone is on fine form, with Michael Fassbender absolutely terrifying as slave owner Edwin Epps. There is already Oscar buzz about this project, and I find myself agreeing. This has Oscar contender written all over it.
