When it was announced at Comic-Con, the news that Superman and Batman would team up for a 2015 Man of Steel sequel, the entire convention hall was nearly brought down by sheer power fan boy glee. It's no doubt this is going to be one of the biggest movies of that year (alongside Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars Episode VII), but the question on everybody's lip is: who is going to play Batman? Many are assuming that Joseph Gordon Levitt will don the cowl, as teased at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, tying in Warner Bros. fledgling DC Cinematic Universe to Christopher Nolan's epic take on the Caped Crusader. But now, news has come from the studio that they are going down a different route.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Zack Snyder is looking for an actor in has late 30's/early forties who is, as the article puts its, "established and rugged". The names on the shortlist at the moment include Ryan Goslin, Josh Brolin, Matthew Goode (Ozymandias from Snyder's Watchmen, Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield from The Hobbit), Joe Manganiello (who will be known to fans of True Blood and How I Met Your Mother), and Max Martini (last seen in Pacific Rim as the fantastically named Hercules Hansen). Also, the movie won't act as another origin for Batman (thank god, because it is SO not needed), with this version of the vigilante already working in this universe for some time. The movie will highlight an antagonistic relationship between the heroes, similar to Frank Miller's alternate future comic book mini series The Dark Knight Returns (which is said to be used as inspiration for the sequel). So what do people think about these developments? Sound off below.
