“I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see. And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made.” That’s quite obviously not a line from the movie. That’s a quote from Jeff Bridges in an interview for GQ magazine, about his latest movie which also has Ryan Reynolds attached. And when your lead star in politely shit canning his own movie, that should tell you everything you need to know.
I’ll be honest here. I don’t really feel like writing much about this shit heap, because it doesn’t deserve it. I firmly believe that Bridges was being quite reserved in what he said. But if you’re looking to see a movie that has been ruined by execs and notes, then this is it. That said, why anybody would option a movie that’s mainly a reincarnation of Men In Black, with sprinklings of Hellboy and Ghost, is anyones guess. And while “The Dude” is blaming the studio, he needs to look in the mirror here too. He dialled in this performance, long distance. Ryan Reynolds, while likeable is probably happy the whole ordeal is over and looks bored throughout.
What an ordeal R.I.P.D. is. This is an hour and a half of poor story telling, brutal visual fx and annoying performances. Essentially, go to see this if you want to lose a few hours off your life. Lets be brutally honest here. What the hell would you expect from a movie that's called Rest In Peace Department.
