Another 12 months have gone whizzing by and over the next few days, plenty of reels and discs will go whizzing through projectors and players, as the Cork Film Festival gets into swing. As I do every year, I've hand picked a selection of movies that are worth checking out! To purchase tickets click here So lets get cracking.
November 12th
Moon Man - Triskel Christchurch - 1100
A fantastical animated movie, with a style that Tim Burton would be proud of, tells the story of The Man in the Moon coming to Earth. The visual style alone is worthy of your attention!
Cinema Paradiso - Cork Opera House - 1730
Idolised and loved for many years, Paradiso is one of the few genuine love letters to cinema and this is a great opportunity to see the Cannes Grand Jury prize winner, on the big screen.
Don Jon - Gate Cinema - 2100
The first movie written and directed by Joseph Gordon Levitt will certainly have audiences choking on their popcorn as it wears its heart well and truly on its sleeve, let alone bodily fluids. Since the first trailer, this has promised nothing but fast paced and tight laughs. Granted, it may not be for the mother in-law but showcases JGL as more than a quality actor.
November 13th
The Blues Brothers - Cork Opera House - 1400
Forget Mary Poppins and Grease. The greatest musical of all time is The Blues Brothers. Dan Aykroyd stars alongside the late and brilliant John Belushi in a movie that will have you smiling and tapping your foot from beginning to end.
All Is Lost - Cork Opera House - 2030
It takes a fine actor to carry an entire movie on their shoulders. Many have tried and failed. One of the most recent successes has been James Franco in 127 Hours. And now, Robert Redford finds himself alone at sea after a shipping container punched a hole into his yacht. All Is Lost has been receiving incredibly high praise and Redford shows that he still has it!
Felix The Cat: The Original Megastar - Triskel Christchurch - 2130
Ever before Garfield hated Mondays, Felix the cat was bringing smiles and cheer to many. There is a live
score here written and performed by Sean O’Hagan and The High Llamas live in The Triskel, so for something a bit different and for animation fans alone, this is a must see.
November 14th
The Counsellor - Gate Cinema - 1815
Ridley Scott, Michael Fassbender and Cameron Diaz dry humping a car. What more do you want?
A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III - Gate Cinema - 1345
Proving that he is still capable of "winning", the Tiger blood consumer, Charlie Sheen is back on the big screen here with something that is a little bit outside the box, but still manages to bring a few laughs with it. Great to see Sheen on decent form here.
The Big Lebowski - Cork Opera House - 1400
To the Film Festival's director, James Mullighan and his team, they have provided a great chance to see older, great movies on the big screen. And the Big Lebowski? Need we say more? Abide!
November 15th
Mistaken For Strangers - Cork Opera House - 1800
For the music fans, this is right up your alley. Revolving around The National in 2010 as they were about to head off on the biggest tour of their career, Mistaken for Strangers shows an amazing contrast between two brothers combined with plenty of live footage from the tour.
November 16th
Dylan Moran: Desert Island Flicks - Cork Opera House - 1800
Long regarded as the greatest Irish comedian of all time, Dylan Moran will be live on stage chatting about some of his favourite movies. Not to be missed.
November 17th
Frozen 3D - Gate Cinema - 1130
Having seen quite alot of footage from Frozen over the last few months, I can heartily say this will definitely entertain the adults and kids alike. Combining the classic old school Disney with the more modern sensibilities of 3D computer animation, this is bursting with loveable characters and catchy tunes!
Saving Mr. Banks - Cork Opera House - 1800
Save the best till last? Again, I've been privvy to have seen quite an amount of footage from Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney who attempts to get the rights for Mary Poppins from PL Travers (Emma Thompson). This is going to be in alot of peoples best movies of the year, and considering it doesn't open until the end of November, here's a great opportunity to see it early.
So there you go. There is absolutely truck loads more going on during the festival including the Vitaphonic presents Discodrome providing an epic way to finish off your night at the Cork Film Festival with live performances, visual projections and some top notch music. And, it's all free once you bring your ticket stub.
