Last week, Quentin Tarantino announced he was putting his upcoming movie, The Hateful Eight, on hold after the script was leaked, opting to instead focus on other projects and publish the script for the ensemble Western to be sold in bookstores. But the story doesn't end there. Now, the director is suing gossip website Gawker for posting the script on their Defamer blog, his lawyers claiming the site is costing him royalties that would come from the eventual publication of the script. Gawker is hitting back, ready to fight the case, saying that they are just doing their job, providing information for people who had heard of the story of the leak and want to know more.
The lawsuit goes on to claim that the leak was only limited to a few people, before Gawker posted an article encouraging people who had the script to send it to them. Only then did the script appear online. If the the lawsuit is successful, Tarantino will net $1m in damages against Gawker, and a further $1m against the anonymous file-sharing website that hosted the leak. No doubt we haven't heard the last of this story, so we will keep you updated as it unfolds.
