The nostalgia is strong with Pixels, with Chris Columbus (who family blockbuster thing down with the likes of Home Alone and the first two Harry Potters under his belt) at the helm as a race of aliens, after misinterpreting videos of classic arcade games, attack the earth with icons of gaming past, such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, and Pong. Only a group of arcade prodigies from years past (Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage, and Josh Gad) can save the world. So, it's a big, dumb, effects heavy Summer movie, but check out the below trailer, and tell me this doesn't look like a shed load of fun?
It's understandable that the inclusion of Sandler and Kevin James might put some people off, but the pair do put in some solid work on occasion (also they are the only two member present of the usual Happy Madison crew, so that could be a blessing), and the presence of a director of the caliber of Columbus, who as stated before knows a thing or two about this type of movie, should keep them in check. But this first trailer is all about the effects, and they are absolutely wonderful, with the game characters brought brilliantly to life (the sight of the pong paddles taking down the Taj Mahal had me positively giddy). This Summer is packed full of big budget blockbusters, but Pixels promises to be the perfect Summer movie: fun, loud, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
