When Lucasfilm and Disney announced they were planning a series of Star Wars spin-offs, separate from Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, of course rumours abounded who, or what, these adventures would focus on. The one idea that never seemed to go away was a young Han Solo movie, charting what the smuggler, thief and scoundrel got up to before meeting Luke and Obi Wan in the Mos Eisley Cantina. It seemed a bit too crazy a premise to tackle, sure, but it definitely had some legs, and, lo and behold, Lucasfilm have announced the next Star wars anthology, due May 25th 2018, will indeed focus on Corellia’s most charming scoundrel, and how he came to be called just that. And who else could handle an idea this crazy? Phil Lord and Chris Miller, of course, who’ve seen their fair share of crazy ideas pan out. Of course, I’m talking about 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie.
Speaking of the new, the pair had this to say, "This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” Everything really is coming up Millhouse for Miller and Lord recently, with this project just another high profile gig to add to their work load, alongside writing and producing an animated Spider-Man movie, handling story duties on DC’s The Flash, and prepping a 21 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover (with eyes to direct one or both). The Han Solo spin-off will be there next movie, so it is very likely one, or more, of these projects will be put on the back burner.
With directors found, no doubt attention will turn to who will put on Solo’s white shirt and black vest. How long do you think till Chris Pratt’s name appears on that list?
