With Fox owning the rights to two Marvel Comics properties, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, there has been many a rumour swirling about over the last few years suggesting that the studio would pull a Marvel with an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover. Now, the rumours have grown some more legs, with Bryan Singer, recently returned to the X-Men franchise, addressing the idea directly with Yahoo! movies, saying, “Those ideas are in play. That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is natural mechanism by which to do it. It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say.” Of course, flexible time-lines have become a major part of the X-Men franchise with Days of Future Past setting up the all new, all different universe of next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, complete with new, younger versions of the core team, and with the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot focusing on alternate dimensions, a good guess can be made with how a crossover between the two teams could work.
But of course, all this really hangs on who well Josh Trank’s re-imagining of Marvel’s First Family, and to an extent X-Men: Apocalypse, are received, with Singer saying, “We’ll have to how the films turn out. To just say you’re going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that.”
So, it does seem that there have been talks to cross over the two teams, but Fox seem to be cautious about moving forward. Fantastic Four is riding a fair whack of rumours concerning a troubled production (the recent, bizarre decision not to go through with the much heralded 3D conversion didn’t help matters), and time will tell if the recent X-Men renaissance will carry through after the First Class cast inevitably part ways with the franchise. We’ll have to let everything run its course before we get solid confirmation on this, but, seriously, how cool would it be to see the above image on the big screen?
