Coming from director Paul McGuigan (Push, Sherlock) and screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle, the upcoming American Ultra), Victor Frankenstein puts a spin on Mary Shelley’s classic horror tale, focusing on the friendship between the titular monster creating scientist (James McAvoy) and his faithful assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe), and the toll Victor’s obsession with creating life takes on it.
There’s a decidedly modern edge to this new adaption, and I find it quite refreshing that the movie seems to be more about Victor and Igor than the monster. This is a story we have seen time and again, so offering a new spin on familiar elements is incredibly welcome. As is the central pairing, who seem to be having an absolute blast here. Especially with McAvoy relishing every moment as the ultimate mad scientist.
