His follow-up to Frank, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room packed quite the emotional punch for audiences at this years Toronto International Film Festival, and went on to pick up the Grolsch People’s Choice Award, which bodes well for the Irish director’s adaption of Emma Donoghue’s (who also provided the screenplay) novel of the same name. The coveted award has quite a bit of prestige attached to it, as previous winners have done quite well in the Oscar race, with Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech, and 12 Years a Slave going on to win the award for Best Picture.

Starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, Room is the story of a mother and her young son who are held captive in a small for over seven years. This win is huge, as it solidifies Room as an Oscar contender and there is no doubt we’ll hear its name mentioned when the Oscar race picks up towards the end of the year. Abrahamson has proven himself as an immense talent over the last few years, and its great to see him get the praise he deserves.
Room reaches American audiences on October 16th, before coming to Irish shores on January 29th next year.
