Much like the invasion from the first movie, yesterday’s reveal of the first trailer for long awaited sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, is something we didn’t see coming. And as awesome as it was to see the likes of Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman back in action, I think everyone was asking the same question: where’s Will Smith? With so many of the original cast returning, including Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch, the once and future Fresh Prince was conspicuous by his absence. And while we’ll might never know we didn’t sign on the dotted line for the sequel, we now know what has become of his character, Col. Steven Hiller, thanks to the rather awesome viral site, warof1996.com. Perusing the rich and detailed timeline of events between the first movie and next year’s sequel, you’ll come across this entry for 2007:
While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.
So, the good old 'died off screen’ approach. But with Dylan (Jessie Usher) being touted as a main character, I get the feeling Hiller will make his presence felt in some way in the sequel.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE is released June 24, 2016.
