With JJ Abrams gone to a galaxy far, far away, the rebooted Star Trek franchise finds itself now been steered by Fast & Furious’ Justin Lin, and if this first trailer for Star Trek Beyond is anything to go by, his vision of the series will be a very different animal.
The minute the opening strains of The Beastie Boy’s ‘Sabotage’ (a throwback to Abrams’ first movie in the series) you know the dour tone of Star Trek Into Darkness is done away with, and we’re in for a fun action adventure, with heavy emphasis on the action and liberal helping of humour (no doubt thanks to Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s script). We also get our first look at Sofia Boutella, following her acrobatic turn in Kingsman: The Secret Service, donning alien make up for another bad ass role, and Idris Elba unrecognisable as the reptilian big bad of the piece (dammit, he’s not a Klingon). The light, action orientated tone may anger hardcore Trek fans (can never tell the difference, if any, between Trekkers and Trekkies. Please let me know in the comments below), but it’s really refreshing to see a big franchise steer away from the darker, gritty tone so many are embracing these days. And over the last few movies, this was the direction Star Trek seemed to be heading anyway. If anything, thanks to the action mostly taking place planet side, this feels like the movie Insurrection wanted to be. Hopefully, this fares much better.
Star Trek Beyond is set for release July 22nd 2016.
