The Revenant

Why you need to see it: Oscar buzz abounds for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s visceral cinematic tale capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival in the uncharted American wilderness. Could his role as legendary explorer Hugh Glass, finally earn Leonardo DiCaprio a golden statue? With strong support from Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, this looks simply stunning.
Room

Why you need to see it: Having already made a huge impact critically in the States, Room continues to build momentum as the awards corridor opens. Held captive for years in an enclosed space, a woman (Brie Larson) and her 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay) finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time. From Emma Donoghue’s powerful screenplay from her own best-selling novel, to Lenny Abrahamson’s beautiful direction and two powerful central performances from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, expect much talk and adoration for Room.
Dead Pool
Released: Feb 10th (USA / IRE / UK)
Why you need to see it: Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero brings his dark, twisted brand of kick-ass in February and fans have been loyally following the breadcrumbs of a brilliant marketing campaign. From the trailers, Ryan Reynolds absolutely nails it as former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a killer sense of humour, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Hail Caesar!
Released: Feb 5th (USA) - Feb 26th (IRE / UK)
Why you need to see it: A new Coen brothers film is always an enticing prospect and this all-star cast that includes Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlet Johansson and Tilda Swinton has us rubbing our hands with glee. The Coen Brothers travel to the golden age of Hollywood, as private eye/movie company fixer Eddie Mannix (Brolin) must solve the mystery behind the disappearance of a big star (Clooney) mid-way through the shoot of his latest picture.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
Released: March 25th (USA/ IRE / UK)
Why you need to see it: With early word suggesting that director Zack Snyder has indeed delivered the goods, Batman V Superman marks a must-see event on the film calendar. From the trailers, Ben Affleck’s debut as the caped crusader shows he’s more than capable of picking up where Christian Bale left off and with Henry Cavill back for more Superman intensity and Gal Gadot showing the boys how it’s done as the formidable Wonder Woman, the stage is set for one of the most epic show downs of the year.

Independence Day: Resurgence
Release Date: 24th June (U.S./IRE/U.K.)
Why you need to see it: Will Smith may not be returning, but almost everyone else is back for the sequel we’ve been waiting twenty years for. What we’ve seen so far may not have teased the epic destruction of the original Independence Day, but that really is director Roland Emmerich’s bread and butter, and you just know he will pull out all the stops as humanity takes on another alien invasion.

Why you need to see it: The beloved characters of Finding Nemo just keep swimming with this long awaited sequel, as Ellen DeGeneres once again lends her voice to the forgetful Blue Tang as she ends up on the missing list as she searches for where she came from.

Why you need to see it: Forget Jared Leto as The Joker. Sure, it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the character, but DC Comics have always excelled at villains, so a movie that puts some of their top bad guys, including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and Captain Boomerang, onto the same team will be something special indeed. And the fact that most of the characters look like they were ripped directly from the comic page will make up for the look of The Joker being so off the mark.
September to December
Magnificent 7
Release Date: Sept 23rd (USA/IRE/UK)
Why you need to see it: With the director of Traning Day at the helm and magnificent cast (sorry) which includes Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington, the Akira Kurosawa remake is something that should definitely be in your radar. Even if curiosity does the kill the cat here, it’s going to be interesting to say the least.
Deepwater Horizon
Release Date: Oct 30th (USA/IRE/UK)
Why you need to see it: Just in time for Halloween. The real life horor story of the worst oil spill in US History, that happened only 6 years ago. Mark Wahlberg and John Malkovich star in what is set to be gripping stuff altogether. Here’s hoping that Hollywood doesn’t try and push too many political agendas through this one. Either way, we might get to see Marky Mark rescue some seals.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Release Date: Oct 21st (USA/IRE/UK)
Why you need to see it: While Chris McQuarrie is out of directing duties on this one, Edward Zwick teams up with his Last Samurai star, Tom Cruise once again. The original Jack Reacher was an absolute blast. It was gritty and packed a serious punch. Not to mention some insane car chase sequences. If they can keep the formula intact, we’re onto a winner.
Doctor Strange
Release Date: Oct 28th (IRE/UK) - Nov 4th (USA)
Why you need to see it: Benedict Cumberbatch. Need I see more? Cumberbitches aside, Doctor Strange could well be an incredibly hard character to market to mainstream audiences, as the Marvel cinematic universe gets a bit more geeky. It’s going to be really interesting to see what they do with this one!
Rogue One - A Star Wars Story
Release Date: 16th Dec (USA/IRE/UK)
Why you need to see it: We love Gareth Edwards here, and we genuinely can’t wait to see what he does with a Star Wars movie that revolves around the plans for the Deathstar being stolen by the Rebels.
Passengers
Release Date: Dec 21st (USA) Dec 23rd (IRE/UK)
Why you need to see it: Jon Spaihts is known as the go to guy for space thrillers when it comes to scripts. With the Imitation game director Morten Tyldum warming up the director's chair and Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence aboard a spacecraft travelling to a new colony on a distant planet, this could be the surprise of the 2016. Especially considering all the passengers on the spaceflight are asleep. Except one.
