Originally set to come our way in the Summer of 2017, fans of Guillermo Del Toro’s Kaiju smashing epic Pacific Rim were understandably upset when Universal removed it from their release schedule altogether (the wails can still be heard echoing through The Movie Bit headquarters), citing they ‘were committed to Pacific Rim 2’, and they were giving it time so the ‘creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.’ At the time it felt like so much Hollywood spin, but it seems there was a nugget of truth to it with the announcement that a new director for the project in the form of Steven S. DeKnight (making his directorial debut), show runner on Netflix’s Daredevil.
While Del Toro will no longer be directing, he will still be closely involved with the sequel, and through a series of tweets endorsed DeKnight’s involvement in helping the series ‘expand big’. While he will certainly be missed, DeKnight is an interesting prospect, and GDT still milling about in the background we’re still guaranteed the crazy monsters and even crazier action spot that made the original Pacific Rim such a blast.
No Release date has been given as of yet.
