Way back in the Summer of 2013, Fox announced plans for X-Force, an X-Men spin-off focusing on a team of mutants that fought to keep Charles Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existance a tad more aggressively than the core team. Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow was brought into write the script, with an eye to possibly direct, and while things were looking rosy for the first few weeks following the announcement, news of the project fizzled out. Fox greenlighting The New Mutants, the team X-Force was born out of, last year seemed to be the final nail in that particular coffin, but news of X-Force resurfaced in the weeks before the release of Deadpool, and that movie’s success with an R rating may see the project resurrected with a more adult audience in mind.
During interviews for Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds said his next mission was getting an X-Force movie off the ground, which does make sense since the Merc with a Mouth has played a significant role in the team’s several iterations. Also, Cable, teased to play a big part in Deadpool 2, is the team’s leader, which makes for endless crossover potential between the two movies. With Deadpool bringing in a truckload money at the box-office, X-Force may become a much more favourable prospect rated R. Speaking to Colllider, Simon Kinberg, Fox’s keeper of everything comic-book related, confirmed the movie’s chances have improved, saying:
"I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and who knows?"
While it’s not a confirmation that the movie is back on, things are definitely looking up for X-Force.
