A few days back, Sigourney Weaver teased that Neill Blomkamp’s “on hold” Alien 5 is still coming, promising a very intriguing future the alien franchise, with it and Alien: Covenant possibly seeing the past and future of the series exist side by side. Things got a bit more interesting last night, with Blomkamp posting another piece of concept art from the project on Instagram, featuring a grown-up Newt, the fan favourite moppet introduced in Aliens, who infamously died off screen before the credits rolled on Alien 3:
If Newt is indeed part of Alien 5, what does that mean for Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection? Her being alive basically cancels out those two sequels (as does Hick’s miraculous recovery, another character Blomkamp hinted at returning), and while the director has called the project the “genetic sequel” to Alien and Aliens, he also pointed out that it wouldn't erase the events of the final two instalments in the franchise. So, if that is the case, what does Newt’s role in Alien 5 mean? Clone? Robot? This project gets more and more interesting the more we hear of it.
