With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice currently sitting at $530 million worldwide, things are off to a great start for Warner Bros. and their burgeoning DC Extended Universe. But one thing that seemed to bother a hell of a lot of people about the historical superhero smackdown was the movie’s dour tone and overall lack of fun. Now, before a tidal wave of hate from the movie’s fans come this site’s way, I’m not wanting the DCEU to become what a carbon copy of what Marvel Studios have created, but a moment of levity to break the dirge of despair was sorely needed. Well, it looks like the second movie out Warner Bros.’ gate, Suicide Squad, may be undergoing a change of tone, with Birth. Movies. Death. reporting that the studio is pumping "tens of millions of dollars” into David Ayer’s super villain team up for reshoots to add a bit of levity to proceedings. Now, a sense of fun was something we all expected from the movie, especially with the release of the second trailer which set the action to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody , but according to the site’s source, “Every joke in the movie is in the trailer”. And considering the fantastic reaction that trailer received, Warner Bros. wants to capitalise on that, ordering reshoots that beef up the joke quotient of the movie and add more character moments and interactions .
If this turns out to be true, these reshoots do herald a change of direction for the DCEU. James Wan has gone on record that his Aquaman will be different in to to Dawn of Justice (complete with sea monsters), and Warner Bros. don’t have to completely go down the MCU route. Hell, they don’t have to change anything they have planned for the DCEU in the future, but an injection of heart was something Batman v Superman needed to counteract the overwhelming sense of despair swirling around the two comic book icons. Whatever happens, this piece of news will no doubt further fuel the DC/Marvel fanboy war that has been raging on the Internet for the last few years.
