Bringing one of the most famous manga series to the big screen, production has begun on Rupert Sanders’ (Snow White and the Huntsman) Ghost in the Shell, in Wellington, New Zealand, and the first image from the project has come our way, featuring lead star Scarlett Johansson as ass kicking cyborg, The Major.
For those not manga or anime literate, Ghost in the Shell is a famous Kodasha Comics manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, set in a future where cybernetics are common place and even normal people possess the ability to interface with various computer networks. In a world where people’s brains can be hacked, turning them into puppets for various nefarious mad men, Section 9 exists as an elite counter terrorism task force, specialising in cyber warfare an led by The Major. Joining Johansson are Pilou Asbæk (reuniting with the actress following Lucy) as The Major’s second in command Batou, famed Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano (Battle Roayle, Zatoichi) as Section 9 chief Daisuke Aramaki, and Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire, Funny Games) as The Laughing Man, a mad man with the singular goal of wiping out leading cybernetics manufacturer, Hanka Robotics.
