Following on from recent release date reshuffling, the road to 202’s Godzilla vs Kong has hit another pothole, a pretty major one, with Deadline reporting that Gareth Edwards has opted out of directing 2019’s Godzilla 2. After rebooting the King of Monsters to jaw dropping effect, Edwards was attached to the sequel from pretty much the moment it was announced, long before plans to have it tie into a larger universe where he rubs shoulders with King Kong (getting his own reboot with Kong: Skull Island in 2017). Even when the House of Mouse came calling to offer Edwards Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla 2 was always on his dance card.
But now, he has left the project on amicable terms with Legendary and Warner Bros. to pursue smaller projects after his turn in the Star Wars sandbox (the change from the original June 8th 2018 to March 22nd 2019 could have been to give a break between blockbusters). This leaves the studio on the search for a new director, hopefully one with a similar vision who can handle the grand scale of the original, especially with the follow-up rumoured to bring in even more of Toho’s classic monsters.
