Following his rather great feature debut with 2013’s under appreciated Evil Dead remake, it’s been relatively quiet on the Fede Alvarez front. But now the visionary director is back with the claustrophobic Don’t Breathe, a horror thriller with an utterly tense and intriguing premise, as a group of thieves, including Evil Dead’s Jane Levy, who break into the house of a wealthy blind man (Stephen Lang) thinking their in for an easy score. But they soon discover the house’s owner isn’t as helpless as they thought.
Who could have thought you could make Stephen Lang even scarier than he usually is. The man we all know as Col. Quaritch is utterly terrifying here, and Alverez manages to ratchet up the tension to a maddening degree. And that’s all in a trailer. Horror fans put this one in your diary.
