It’s hard to believe it was only nine years ago that Robert Downey Jr. stepped into the red and gold armour, ushering in the age of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With thirteen movies under its belt, Marvel Studios’ great experiment in a viable shared universe of movies has gone from strength to strength, and now it has reached another milestone, with Captain America: Civil War’s weekend take pushing the MCU as a whole passed the $10 billion worldwide mark, making it the highest grossing film series of all time. To put it in perspective, the James Bond series stands at nearly $7 Billion, while the eight Harry Potter movies have taken in $7.7 Billion.
Speaking of Cap’s third outing, it’s third week of release on a world wide stage has seen it bank a global total of $940 million, and as its stands now, it is the sixth highest grossing super hero movie of all time, behind The Avengers ($1.518 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron (1.405 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion), and The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion). There is still some life left in it, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it reach the billion mark in the coming weeks.
