Long before Sicario hit our screens, plans were being made for a sequel for Denis Villeneuve’s hard hitting crime thriller, and it wasn’t any surprise as to why, with the movie fast becoming one of the big favourites of 2015. Now, we get word, via Deadline, that the project is one step closer to becoming a reality with Lionsgate in talks with Italian director Stefano Sollima (Gomorra) after Villeneuve walked away from the project, which has also gotten a new name. Now titled Soldado (the Spanish word for Soldier), Benicio Del Toro’s enigmatic Alejandro Gillick will take centre stage, with Josh Brolin also back as CIA agent Matt Graver. Gne this time round is Emily Blunt, and with her principled FBI agent being pretty much the sole voice of reason in the original, expect the shades of grey to much greyer this time round, especially with original scriber Taylor Sheridan returning as well.
No release date has been given as of yet, but production is expected to begin on Soldado in Autumn.
