While it never went away, it’s safe to say Pokemon is now back to early 90’s level of hype thanks to Pokemon Go invading every city, small town, and backwoods area the world over. So it’s not surprising that Legendary Entertainment and The Pokemon Co. have announced that the elusive little Pocket Monsters are coming to the big screen. What may throw you for a loop is in what form, with the first movie being based on the relatively new Great Detective Pikachu, a Nintendo 3DS game, so far only available in Japan, that reimagines the brand’s most recognisable mascot as a Sherlock Holmes-esque master sleuth, complete with deer stalker hat.
Never once would I have thought Detective Pikachu as the way you bring a live action Pokemon to the big screen, but there’s something about putting a hat on Pikachu that makes me incredibly excited to see this, maybe because I want a plush version on my desk right now. Production is said to be fast tracked to begin next year, with longtime Pokemon Co. collaborators Toho distributing the movie in Japan, and Universal handling distribution outside Japan.
