James Gunn has alway said the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would reveal the identity of Star-Lord’s father, and that he would skew wildly from the comic books where his father is Emperor J’son of the Spartex Empire. And skew he did, and it was indeed wild, with last night’s Marvel Comic-Con panel that daddy Star-Lord in the MCU, played by Kurt Russell in the greatest piece of acting since Deadpool, was another major player in the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, Ego. Now, the non-comic fans among you are going 'huh?’, while those whonlive and breath Marvel’s comics output are shouting ‘what the.....!?’, because Ego’s full title is Ego the Living Planet. Yes, Kurt Russell is going full CG to play a gigantic, sentient planet. I’ll let that percolate for a bit.
Guardians was always the place where the MCU could go a bit crazier and anything was possible, and this certainly throws up some crazy possibilities for every one’s favourite bunch of a-holes. The panel also hinted that Ego mightn’t be the only big bad the team face this time round, with Elizabeth Debicki (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) cast as Ayesha, a genetically perfect being who in the comics is also known as ‘Her’, female counterpart to ‘Him’, Adam Warlock, a Guardians member who was teased to be joining the team for sometime. He can actually be found in the first film, encased in a cocoon in The Collector’s lair.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes our way May 5th 2017.
