The first trailer for Sony Pictures' Sci-Fi adventure Passengers, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, is now online. Judging from this first clip, director Morten Tyldum looks to be taking a stab at the lonely, space adventure film - a subject that's been quite popular recently what with the success of Interstellar and The Martian.
Aurora (Lawrence) and Jim (Pratt) are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Aurora and Jim try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other... only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.
Passengers looks to be a visceral, action packed, visual treat and seems to draw on classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. The plot's love story dimension is a nice addition to an often emotionless genre. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts is Sci-fi alum, having co-wrote 2012's Prometheus, and director Tyldum did great work with 2011's Headhunters and 2014's The Imitation Game. With a cast that also features Michael Sheen, Lawrence Fishburne and Andy Garcia, this should be a big one.
