With the likes of Hannibal, Fargo, and, most recently, Westworld debuting as t.v. shows to amazing receptions, it’s definitely open season for movies to make the jump to the small screen. But it’s still one hell of a surprise to see Michel Gondry’s sublime, imaginative Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being prepped for t.v. with Anonymous Content (the production company behind the original movie) teaming up with Universal Cable Productions. As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s early days yet for the romantic drama, which revolves around an estranged couple (of course, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in the movie) who decide to erase each others memories of the other, with Zev Borow (Forever, Chuck) approached to pen the script for the series.
Gondry and screen writer Charlie Kaufman (a duo who, along with Pierre Bismuth, won an Academy Award for best screenplay) will not be involved with the potential series, but Fargo has proved a series can excel without the original creators involvement. It’s anyone’s guess when we will (if ever) actually see this, but if it can at least capture a sliver of what made the movie so magical, Anonymous Content and UCP could have a hit on their hands.
