With Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Arrival already the darling of the festival circuit, attention has now turned to his next project, the thirty years later sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner. Details on the movie have been thin on the ground so far, but now two big pieces have come our way. First up, we don’t have to wait that long for the sequel to hit the big screen, less than a year in fact, with the release date set for October 6th 2016. On top of that, we now have an official title: Blade Runner 2049. Makes sense really, it does take thirty years after the original, but it does have the air of a schlocky t.v. show about it. The title reveal also accompanies a behind the scenes image from the sequel, featuring director Villeneuve, producer Scott, and stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in the same room together. Look closely, and you’ll see Rick Deckard’s blaster by Villeneuve’s elbow.
Story details are unknown at this point, but Ford will be reprising the role of Deckard alongside newcomers Gosling, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, and Jared Leto. Many fans of the original balked at the idea of such a delayed sequel when news of it was first announced, but I think fears have been alleviated by Villeneuve’s involvement, who was able to juggle complex themes with intricate story telling in the likes of Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario. It will be interesting to see how this melds with the world Scott created thirty years, especailly with the a script from one the original’s co-scribes, Hampton Fancher, and the screenwriter of the upcoming Logan and Alien: Covenant, Michael Green.
