Giving the usually colourful, monster fighting Power Rangers a slightly serious makeover, the first trailer for Dean Israelite’s big screen reboot has come our way and it’s clear to see that the bright colours and slightly campy tone don’t have much room in this reboot.
The goody two shoes teenagers we grew up have been replaced by snarky outsiders, and this washed out, more serious tone kinda works here. But we’re only really getting half the story with this teaser, which just sets up the story of how Black Ranger Zack (Ludi Lin), Pink Ranger Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Blue Ranger Billy (RJ Cyler), Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G), and Red Ranger Jason (Dacre Montgomery) gained their powers to take on Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa. Missing are the power suits and gigantic ‘Zords. It’ll be interesting to see how Israelite handles these more outlandish elements in this more serious re-imagining.
