Captain Jack Sparrow is making his way back to the big screen, and the first trailer for the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie brings with it a name change, with Salazar’s Revenge replacing the much more pirate-y Dead Men Tell No Tales for those of us in Ireland and the U.K. The name change does make some sense though, with the story revolving around Javier Bardem’s Captain Salazar and his band of ghost soldiers escaping the devils triangle, hell bent on killing every pirate on the seven seas with Jack Sparrow high on his list.
The first teaser is devoid of any Johnny Depp, focusing on Bardem’s ghostly villain, a wonderfully creepy creation (the floating hair is a great effect) that the actor can proudly include on his lengthly list of memorable villains. With Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon Tiki) at the helm, the tone (and the fact that we’re back dealing with undead pirates) does seem more in keeping with the first movie. Getting back to basics isn’t a bad thing, especially since On Stranger Tides seemed to suck the joy out of the franchise. Hopefully, the fifth go around will see it get back on track.
