Potentially one of the most fucked up movies of the year as well as one of the best! It's a good bet that you've never seen anything like Swiss Army Man before. Then again, this critic doesn't know what you pull out of the internet sewers late at night. From a human jet ski propelled by farts to a GPS like erection, Daniel Radcliffe stars alongside Paul Dano in a movie that is an experience, to say the least.
Radcliffe plays a corpse called Manny, who's sudden appearance on a beach halts Hank's (Dano) impending suicide. From there, slowly but surely, Manny becomes more aware as Hank teaches him the ways of the world as they embark on a quest back to humanity. See, told you it was fucked up. And fucked up it is but it's also heartwarmingly funny. The constant stream of farts and erections may be a bit much for some, but they're never forced. While these scenes are funny, they're not just tacked in here for humour and they do actually serve a purpose.
The first 10 minutes or so is a bit bizarre as you realise that you're in for something very, very different with Swiss Army Man. Resist the urge to walk out in the opening 20 minutes and you'll be rewarded with a career best performance from Daniel Radcliffe. This is one of the best performances of the year from any actor. Who'd have thought playing dead would have been this impressive. Paul Dano has phenomenal chemistry with Radcliffe here and the two are an absolute joy to watch. A minor role from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, while adequate is really not worth mentioning.
Swiss Army Man is a movie that will make you think about life in many different ways. I won't point them out here, but everybody should get something out of this. It's poignant, touching and funny. At the same time however, it still is quite a bizarre watch. It may well be too bizarre for some. That said though, you need to leave the movie wash over you with it's charm and you'll be pleasantly surprised with what is one of the better movies of 2016!
