Deadpool really is the little superhero movie that could. Spending years in development hell, Ryan Reynold’s pet project finally got financing from Fox after the strategic ‘leaking’ of test footage blew up the Internet (listen to our interview with co-writer Rhett Reese for more insight into it if you haven’t already). The movie went on to be one of the most successful movies of 2016 for the studio, scoring a sequel pretty soon after it’s release, earning more the $780 million worldwide, and becoming the highest earning R-Rated movie worldwide, dethroning previous title holder The Matrix Reloaded.
While it may have left the cinema a long time and settled into the DVD and Blu-Ray shelves of fans the world over, things are still going well for the Merc with a Mouth, with the movie picking up two Golden Globes nominations, one for Reynolds in Best Actor - Musical or Comedy and the movie itself nominated for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy. While the Golden Globes usually rewards more mainstream, tentpole movies more than the Oscars (the original Ghostbusters got a nomination way back when, and both Heath Ledger were nominated for playing The Joker), seeing a superhero movie nominated for a big award like this is still a bit mind blowing, but it’s a turn of events that is richly deserved.
