We've been given a good look at Assassin's Creed thus far, with a number of trailers showing off the period setting, characteristic action and signature sci-fi elements. With this latest trailer, the last before the film's December 21st release, we get an even better idea of how the adaptation will handle the video game series' central lore - including the legendary 'apple of eden.' Many fans of the games have long taken issue with the series' intermittent and often awkward modern-day sections, favouring the spot-on historical fiction for which the series is famous. Without those sci-fi elements, however, Assassin's Creed would just be another historical epic, and the coming big-screen adaptation looks set to integrate them seamlessly into the narrative.
Director Justin Kurzel wowed and unnerved audiences with the deeply disturbing true crime drama Snowtown in 2011 and admirably tackled Shakespearean drama with last year's Macbeth. Following those 'respectable' projects with a video game adaptation was a surprise to say the least, but having such an interesting filmmaker at the helm could mean that Assassin's Creed will be the movie that finally steers video game adaptations toward critical acclaim.
