Save for a few posters and a trailer which only seemed to show us the movie’s first act, we’ve actually seen very little from Dean Isrealite’s Power Rangers, but what we’ve seen of the Rangers’ new armour and the glimpses of their Zords does suggest the project remaining close to the original series while giving it a modern spin. And while I have my doubts how giant robots and size changing monsters will fit in with the glitter aesthetic suggested by the trailer, the project did seem to be getting the redesigns right. Then concept art for Alpha 5, the team's highly strung robot assistant came our way. As a quick refresher, this is what he looked like in the original show:
It was a pretty fun design, and his constant exclamation of “Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi” put a smile on the face of kid me. Now, here’s the concept art, via IGN:
Yeah, I have no idea what’s going on either. All I do know is that I HATE this redesign. Is it the head lamps for eyes? Or that his head seems to be built around a globe of the Earth? It could be the elongated limps, or the fact that this robot has a fucking pot belly? It’s actually all of these, and this isn’t some Power Rangers fanboy talking here, this is just a really bad design, and even the fact that Bill Hader is providing the voice mightn’t be able to save it. Yes, it’s just concept art and the finished product could look vastly different. But it isn’t filling me with confidence, and has me actually dreading to see what Bryan Cranston will look like as the giant floating head and the team’s leader, Zordon.
Power Rangers is set for release March 24th 2017.
