While it always seemed like a long shot, fans of Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy series (including us here at The Movie Bit) have been waiting for a third installment, especially since 2008’s Hellboy: The Golden Army ended on something of a cliffhanger. The years passed by and it came more and more apparent that Hellboy 3 could be just a pipe dream, despite Del Toro and star Ron Perlman’s willingness to get it done. It’s hard to gage what exactly was stopping it, but with Del Toro saying this would be the most expensive one to make, it could have been a money issue with studios put off by the fact that the first two movie only made a combined box office of $259 million. While that is still pretty respectable, it doesn’t exact;y light the world on fire.
Finally wanting to get the ball rolling on the project, Del Toro posted a poll on Twitter asking for 100,000 votes, saying that if he reached that number he would have a serious meeting with Perlman and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola about the long awaited sequel. That goal was reached, the meeting was had, and unfortunately the outcome wasn’t good:
Again it’s hard to gauge how it fell apart, but this early it seems to have been on a creative. Perhaps one, two, or all of them decided that the best course of action was to leave it well enough alone. So there we have it. While a lot of people will be pretty bummed that there will be no more adventures set in the colourful, visually gorgeous world of Hellboy that Del Toro created, at least we have our answer and can stop holding our breath.

Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) February 21, 2017
