It’s all anyone is talking about this morning, the 89th Academy Awards. But not for the usual glitz and glamour and hosts ding a great/terrible job, but for the monumental cock-up that ended the night. Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were on stage to announce the Best Picture winner, the envelope was opened and after a confusing pause, La La Land was awarded it’s 7th award of the night. Not the La La Landslide people were predicting when the movie’s 14 nominations were announced, but the cast and crew were happy and took to the stage, and then...................a mistake was noticed. It turns out that Moonlight had actually won, and the confusion had come from Warren Beatty being given the wrong envelope (apparently he held in his hand the Best Actress award, which was won by Emma Stone for La La Land). Anyway, it was worth it for Moonlight director Barry Jenkin’s genuine emotion on hearing his little indie film won the top award, and this, the best tweet of the night:
Other than that, it was business as usual for the Oscars, bar the fact that we now have to call Suicide Squad the ‘Oscar Winning Suicide Squad’ after it picked up the award for Best Makeup. Casey Affleck picked up best actor, like it had been heralded for months. La La Land picked up best song, because we knew it would. But despite some awards been a foregone conclusion, it does feel like, for the most part, the deserving people and films won. Check out the full list below.
