NEW STAR WARS MOVIES?

SHARE:

Make what you will of the post over on IESB that brings news of a new trilogy of Star Wars flicks. All this comes from a top secret Lucasfilm insider who claims George Lucas is plotting to create a new bunch of Star Wars movies that will take place after Return Of The Jedi. The plan is, apparently to release a new Star Wars film 2 years after the re-release of Jedi in 3D, which would see a release around 2018. More rumours abound stating that the movies would exist in the same Universe, but have nothing to do with the Skywalker bunch.

Who knows whether or not these musings are true and I have no reason to doubt the article and the 9 movies as opposed to 6 story has never died. Keep in mind, no Hamill, no Ford, no Fisher (I would presume, due to age) and so on and I wonder would the world buy into another trilogy of movies? Where can the stories go? Obviously there is no shortage of novels, graphic and otherwise out there to provide inspiration? As a kid and life long Lucas bank account contributor I used to be more enamoured with the idea of 9 movies, but 6 seemed to bring a natural conclusion. It’s not as if 7,8 and 9 can continue from that shindig on Endor now as it?

With a bit of digging, here’s some ideas for the trilogy sequels, via Wikipedia

In an interview with TheForce.net, producer Gary Kurtz described an early outline for a nine film series. He stated that the original plan for Return of the Jedi was for Han Solo to die and Leia to become "Queen" of her people. Leia was not originally planned to be Luke's sister. "Episode VII" was to focus on Luke Skywalker's life as a Jedi, while "Episode VIII" marked the appearance of Luke's sister (which was not Leia), and "Episode IX" was to be the first appearance of the Emperor. In a later Film Threat interview, he stated that the idea for a third Star Wars trilogy "was very vague. It was Luke's journey really up to becoming sort of the premier Jedi knight in the Obi-Wan Kenobi mold and his ultimate confrontation with the emperor. That was the outline of it and all that happens."

And what does Lucas himself have to say? In a 1997 issue of Star Wars Insider, George said “The whole story has six episodes.... If I ever went beyond that, it would be something that was made up. I really don't have any notion other than 'Gee, it would be interesting to do Luke Skywalker later on.' It wouldn't be part of the main story, but a sequel to this thing.”. In 1999, speaking to Vanity Fair, Lucas denies ever having any plans to make 9 movies. “"When you see it in six parts, you'll understand. It really ends at part six."

And in May 2008, Lucas stuck to his blasters and said I get asked all the time, 'What happens after Return of the Jedi?,' and there really is no answer for that. The movies were the story of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, and when Luke saves the galaxy and redeems his father, that's where that story ends.

So, what do YOU think?
