PHEW! There was a lot riding on Thor doing well this weekend for Marvel. Unlike Iron Man, there was a chance that, due to the other-worldly element, that casual audiences just wouldn't turn up and it wouldn't be a hit. If that was the case, they'd have a pretty big setback prior to The Avengers next year. However, on the back of great reviews across the board, The Hollywood Reporter estimate that it has made 66million in the US this week, bringing the takings worldwide to about 250million.
Whilst not as big an opening as ol' shiny Stark, it's still very good, and a great endorsement for the Norse Superhero. And well deserved too - it's a great movie. Marvel are on a great roll and hopefully they won't shy away from taking risks after people responded well to the mixture of Asgard and Earth. We can also expect confirmation of 'Thor 2' pretty soon then, with all the major castmembers returning. Of course, I'm sure we'll see some of them in 2012 together too........
