Bloodshot originated in Valiant Comics form in 1992 and appeared in over 70 issues, becoming the cornerstone of the Valiant Universe.
The protagonist is Angelo Mortalli, a ruthless killer for the mob who is set up by the family and framed for a murder. He goes into Witness Protection, but is betrayed by an FBI agent guarding him, kidnapped and forcibly subjected to an experimental program in which his body is injected with microscopic computers called nanites. They erase his brain and rebuild it and his body to be a weapon with superhuman strength and healing powers. Bloodshot escapes his makers, and though he isn’t his old self, he tries to figure out who he was. Things get bad for everybody who betrayed him.
The project had, at one stage been rumoured as a possible directing vehicle for Matthew Vaughn, but he isn’t part of this equation, per Deadline.
I’m excited about this. Depending on the director/star combination this could either sink or soar. To me, Vaughn would’ve been a great candidate to helm the project, given his X-Men and Kick Ass experience alone, however, it doesn’t seem he will be around for this. Other candidates that strike me as suitable to the project could be District 9 director Neill Blomkamp or Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn.
As for who could star in the project… Depending on whether it gets out of the deep studio development pool, the first person that came to mind, to me, was Tom Hardy.
If the project can be developed to the point of production, I, like most others who hear about it, will look forward to it immensely.
Screenwriter Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) penned the spec. script from which the deal emerged. The film will be produced by Original Film Banner and Valiant Entertainment, the publisher of the original comic.
