Long before Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four flopped as hard as it could and became one of the worst reviewed comic book movies of all time, 20th Century Fox had set a sequel in place for June 9th 2017. Now, everyone assumed that the franchise was dead and Fox would call it quits, with many hoping that the rights would revert back to Marvel Studios (along similar lines to how Sony are sharing Spider-Man with the comic book movie juggernaut). But that doesn’t appear be the case, with writer and producer Simon Kinberg telling MTV News that the sequel could still happen, saying
"I’m really focused on the next one. I do believe there is a great ’Fantastic Four’ movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is. We’re figuring out what that movie would be. I’d like that to happen.” Ok, I’ll admit that the cast could add up to a great FF movie, but with the movie we got posting a $100+ loss, would the studio really go out on a limb with a sequel? That, and I don’t think anyone would want to see it.
Kinberg went on to talk about all the behind the scenes issues we’ve heard so much about, and was pretty diplomatic about it, "I’ve been on plenty of happy movies that don’t turn out to be very good movies, I’ve been on a lot of unhappy, difficult sets that turn out to be great movies. There was a lot of attention on the process of making that movie. It’s hard, when you’re making a movie, movies are hard to make. It’s just the reality.” He was also diplomatic about fans reaction to the movie, saying, "I was obviously disappointed," he continued. "I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.” No, Mr. Kinberg, it wasn’t unfairly treated. We’ll have to wait and see if this sequel actually materialises, but personally, I don’t think we should be holding our breath. Not that we would anyway.
