With production slated to begin later this Summer, Marvel Studio’s has announced the full cast for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, and there is every chance you’ll be surprised at who will be joining the MCU for the Thunder God’s third solo movie. First up, taking on the main villain duties is Cate Blanchett, bringing her considerable talents and range to role of Hela, goddess and ruler of Hel, the realm of the dead where the souls of Asgardians who did not die in battle ultimately settle. It’s a pretty fun role, and it should be blast to see Blanchett basically play the polar opposite of The lord of the Rings' Galadriel. Staying on the female newcomers, Creed’s Tessa Thompson will be going bad ass as Valkyrie, the idealistic leader of the Valkyrior, guardians of Valhala which house the souls of those who did in battle. Backing up Blanchett, and more than likely providing a foe for Thor to whale on, is Karl Urban as the axe wielding Skurge, a villain usually seen in the company of his true love, The Enchantress, a role previously rumoured for Blanchett. And last, but certainly not least, is Jeff Goldblum as the eccentric Grandmaster, a powerful, long living cosmic entity with a love of games and using the unwitting heroes of the Marvel Universe as pawns. Just take a moment to savour the fact that Jeff Goldblum is now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Accompanying the massive announcement, we got our first look at concept art from the film, showing Hela receiving a less than warm reception as she enters Asgard.
Chris Hemsworth returns for what is being called a ‘cosmic road trip’, with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (the first time we’ve seen him since Thor: The Dark World), Idris Elba’s Hiemdell, Anthony Hopkins’ Odin, and, probably the biggest surprise addition until Mr. Goldblum, Mark Ruffalo, once again going green as the Hulk. With the action taking place in the cosmos, Natalie Portman has been confirmed as a no show, and I guess we can rule out Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings too. Jamie Alexander hasn't been announced as returning as Lady Sif, but a Twitter post teases that more announcements could be incoming.
Thor: Ragnarok is set for release November 3rd 2017.
